A recent PSDP study attempted to provide a comprehensive assessment of the profile, competitiveness, and the needs of the Jamaican Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprise (MSME) sector. Based on the findings a strong argument was made that in order for Jamaica to make the transition from a Developing Country to a Developed Country, it is imperative to create a knowledge-based society. A society grounded in research and development, innovation, and the efficient and effective use of new technologies. Without this national focus, it will become increasingly difficult for Jamaica to compete globally and, indeed, progress along its development path.

Why a business news and feature content format targeted at the SME market segment?

There is a distinct absence of programmes targeted to the owners and operators of small and medium sized firms. This segment is worthy of focus for the following reasons:

• Most operators are not trained in the operational areas of running a business such as marketing, accounting, finance, legal among many others.

• The demands and long hours of their business preclude them from attending courses, workshops, seminars and pursuing training in general.

• Many are desperate for advice, support and guidance in negotiating the difficult economic conditions.
